Autumn
(Episode 21)
Try it at home!
At home …
-
Start a leaf collector album. Wander around outside, and collect
various leaves. Keep notes about the bark, berries, seeds, etc.,
that go with the leaves. Tape the leaves to the notes about each
different type of leaf you collect.
-
Take leaf rubbings. Place a leaf underneath a piece of paper. Peel
the paper from a crayon, and rub the side of the crayon over the
paper.
In the kitchen …
Bake a pumpkin cake.
- What you’ll need:
Cake mix (any flavor you like)
White frosting
Red, yellow, and green food coloring
Mix the cake according to directions on the box. Fill one cupcake liner
with batter. Pour the remainder of the batter into a Bundt pan, and bake
according to directions; but don’t overbake the cupcake. Let cool. Mix a
small amount of frosting with green food coloring. Mix the rest of the
frosting with red and yellow food coloring to create orange. Frost the
cake with the orange frosting. Frost the cupcake on the sides and bottom
with the green frosting. Place the cupcake, bottom side up, on the top
of the cake to look like a pumpkin stem.
Around town …
-
Visit the park during the autumn months, and take note
of all the different colors on the trees.
At the library …
While reading, ask your child if
he or she can guess what will happen on the next page. If you are
reading a picture book, ask your child to explain what the pictures
mean. After the reading the book, have your child retell the story in
his or her own words.
