Do the Right Thing (Episode 15)
Try it at home!
At home …
-
Have your child write or tell you about different ways he or she has
helped a friend. Draw pictures to illustrate these examples.
-
Talk to your child about what number to call if there is
an emergency and no adult is around. When talking about
9-1-1, say “nine-one-one” and not “nine-eleven.” There
is no 11 on a telephone, which may confuse small
children. Teach your child that 9-1-1 is not a game and
to only call if there is an emergency.
In the kitchen …
Hold a cookie decorating party for your child and his or her friends.
Encourage them to share their creations with residents at a local
nursing home.
-
What you’ll need:
Several dozen sugar cookies (prepared ahead)
Variety of icings
Variety of candies
Let the children get creative to create works of art
on each cookie. Afterward, make arrangements with a local nursing home
to have the children deliver the cookies.
Around town …
-
Visit a local soup kitchen for a tour. Help out if asked.
-
Draw pictures, and give them to residents at a local nursing home.
-
Volunteer to help pick up trash at local parks and other public
areas.
At the library …
While reading, ask your child if he or she can guess
what will happen on the next page. If you are reading a picture book,
ask your child to explain what the pictures mean. After the reading the
book, have your child retell the story in his or her own words.
