Musical Instruments
(Episode 9)
Try it at home!
At home …
-
Tune in to different types of radio stations (classical,
rock, jazz, country, etc). See if you can name the
different types of instruments being played on each
station.
-
Make your own imaginary marching band. March around the
house playing the imaginary instrument of your choice.
In the kitchen …
Try making these fun and easy pretzels shaped like instruments!
-
What you’ll need:
2 - 16 oz. loaves of bread dough (frozen is fine)
1 egg white, slightly beaten
1 tsp. of water
Roll the thawed bread into 24 equal-sized balls. Roll
out each ball, and have your child shape them into different musical
instruments. Put the pretzels on a greased cookie sheet. Let them sit
for 20 minutes, and then brush with egg white and water. Place a shallow
pan with 1” of boiling water on the bottom rack of the oven. Bake
pretzels at 350° on the rack above the water for 20 minutes or until
golden brown.
Around town …
-
Visit parades and watch for local marching bands. Name
all the instruments you see.
-
Stop in to a local music store. Have an employee explain
the different instruments they sell and how each is
played.
At the library …
While reading, ask your child if he or she can guess
what will happen on the next page. If you are reading a picture book,
ask your child to explain what the pictures mean. After the reading the
book, have your child retell the story in his or her own words.
